The Orlando Sentinel is reporting that construction of the Burnham Institute for Medical Research may occur days or weeks earlier than the official Oct. 3 groundbreaking.
Burnham's 175,000-square-foot home is scheduled to be occupied by April 1, 2009, several months after Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies is expected have labs operating inside the 100,000-square-foot building being built for them by Port St. Lucie.
It was 11 months ago that the La Jolla, Calif.-based Burnham Institute opted to set up its East Coast campus in the Lake Nona section of Orlando rather than Tradition in Port St. Lucie. Torrey Pines would agree to a month later to take that Tradition space for its new headquarters.
By the way, it took Scripps Florida, the first California-based researcher to accept Florida money for expansion, is also looking at an early 2009 entry into its permanent facilities in Jupiter's Abacoa development. Of course, Scripps, which had a three-year head start on Burnham and Torrey Pines, was delayed due to the controversial desire to build upon a rural orange grove.
