Far from perfect Breckenridge routs Huskies, 58-7 By Andy Newberry Thursday, September 20, 2007 Hirschi allowed 30 points in one quarter last week and lived to tell about it with a thrilling 54-43 victory over River Oaks Castleberry. Six days later, the Huskies pulled the 30-point trick again, this time in the first quarter. And against the Breckenridge on Thursday night there was no miracle in the making as the Buckaroos dominated Hirschi, 58-7, at Memorial Stadium. Hirschi (3-1) suffered its first loss of the season at the hands of Breckenridge for the second straight year. The Buckaroos (2-2) won their second straight game after an 0-2 start. They have scored 98 points over the last six days. Hirschi lost a fumble, had a false start wipe out a good pass play and suffered three sacks in its first five offensive plays. It got worse from there. "We took a whooping and weren't ready to play and all that falls on my shoulders," Huskies coach Neal Searcy said. "Breckenridge is a good team, but we kept giving them a short field in the first quarter. We've got a lot of areas to improve, but we're going to get better." The Buckaroos, who made all 13 of their offensive snaps in the first quarter from inside Hirschi territory, zipped to a 30-0 lead on two touchdown passes by Travis Wallis and two touchdown runs by Blaine Vick. Daniel Rodriguez provided the other two points with a sack of Hirschi quarterback Darius Thornton for a safety. The Huskies were going with Thornton, who rallied the team last week after injuries to Caymond Edmonds and Harrison Johnson. Johnson entered in the final minute of the first quarter and directed two good Hirschi drives in the second period. The first one died at the Breckenridge 5-yard line, but the Huskies came back with a quick-strike touchdown on a 12-yard pass from Johnson to C.J. Turner with 4:49 left in the half. Turner had a 31-yard catch on the previous play. Turner was the bright spot for the Huskies with seven catches for 111 yards. That gives the team leader 18 receptions for 285 yards in four games. "C.J. always tries to play hard, but we have to get more guys playing like that," Searcy added. Breckenridge scored twice more late in the second quarter and it was with way too much ease. Troy Roberson barely had to elude anyone while scoring on a 41-yard middle screen play, and he also scored on a 13-yard run. The only reason the Buckaroos didn’t hit 50 in the first half was because of an illegal shift that wiped out a 20-yard walk-in touchdown reception by Roberson with seven seconds left. Breckenridge added two more touchdowns in the second half, both on runs by Vick, who scored four times. Vick led all rushers with 166 yards on 22 carries, while Roberson added 96 on 13 attempts. Breckenridge had 427 yards of offense despite a vanilla attack in the second half. The Huskies finished with 123 passing and 58 rushing. Thorton led the way with 37 yards - but he gained 87 only to lose 50 in negative plays.
