Rider hits "fast and hard" in 51-0 rout Nick Gholson Rider coach Scott Ponder admitted earlier this week that his team was suffering a bit of a hangover from last Saturday night's 27-15 loss to Stephenville. But they quickly found a cure on Friday night. A big dose of Plainview was just what the doctor ordered. The Raiders came up with three big plays and 28 points in the first quarter and blew the Bulldogs away 51-0 at Memorial Stadium. Rider ended the non-district part of its schedule 3-1. Plainview is 0-4. All Rider's big first-quarter plays came after quarterback Shavodrick Beaver led the Raiders 75 yards in 10 plays on their opening drive, which ended in a beautiful 27-yard touchdown run by Jurell Thompson. Then Markelle Martin had a 62-yard interception return to set up a Damien Washington touchdown run, and Beaver completed a 47-yard touchdown pass to Chris Edmond and a 63-yarder to Eric Ward to shake Plainview’s confidence early. "We thought about Stephenville all week, so we had to start off fast," said Beaver, who also had a 5-yard touchdown run and threw another 19-yard scoring shot to Edmond in the third quarter. "We came out fast and hard, which is what we wanted to do. Then it got pretty tough down the stretch. We are glad to get out of here alive," Rider coach Scott Ponder said. "They are mad at us, and I guess we are mad at them. They thought we were trying to run it up, but I don't know what else we could have done. They were bringing the heat on us. We had to protect our kids. I'm not going to just hand off and watch our kids get killed," the Rider coach said. Ponder said Plainview was also upset when Rider players were running up the tunnel to the dressing room while the band was playing the school song. "We wanted to get out of here," he said. They turned the ball over five times and never ran an offensive play any closer than the Rider 39-yard-line. Their final rushing totals were 29 carries for 9 yards. Plainview did get into the end zone once - but it was the wrong end zone. After a high snap in punt formation, Rider's Stephen Reeves tackled kicker Jason Miller in the end zone for a third-quarter safety. The Raiders added another touchdown in the fourth on an 18-yard run by Jake Awtry.
