Graham routs Huskies, 52-7 Rob Durham GRAHAM - State-ranked Graham shook off some early jitters and scored 29 unanswered points in the second period to blast Hirschi 52-7 to open District 6-3A play Friday night at Newton Field. The Huskies were unable to get on track, surrendering three safeties in the contest. "Our boys came out of this game feeling like we set up a lot of points for them," Hirschi coach Neal Searcy said. "I'm not taking away anything from Graham because they're a great team, but we gave them a lot of points, and you just can't do that in this district." Graham quarterback Case McCoy threw five touchdowns, all of which came in the first half. After throwing a pair of interceptions to end a pair of Steer scoring opportunities, the sophomore signal caller settled down to help Graham score on the next three possessions. Senior Casey Cox was on the receiving end of two of McCoy's tosses to finish with 48 yards receiving on just four catches. It was Cox's second straight two-touchdown game. "We got off to a little bit of a rusty start, but we eventually got back on track," Graham coach Brad McCoy said. "Offensively, we did a great job of catching the ball, and the defense played extremely well." McCoy, who completed 12 of 23 passes for 202 yards, staked the Steers to a 36-0 lead at the half. The five touchdown passes were his most in a game this season. McCoy connected with Cody Stansell from 15 yards out in the first quarter. The sophomore then found Jake Holub for a 25-yard touchdown early in the second quarter. From there, McCoy hooked up Case Cox twice and Hubbell Allen once before intermission. It was Cox’s second two-touchdown game in as many weeks. Hirschi finally got on the scoreboard in the third quarter on Desmond Ridley's 12-yard run. Ridley led the Huskies with 27 yards rushing. Holub, the area's leading rusher, had 97 rushing yards for the Steers. LaRay Mitchell led the Huskies with 80 receiving yards on two catches. Graham avenged a 34-21 loss in 2006 that set the Steers back in district play. However, Graham won the remainder of its games to vault into the playoffs. Searcy said his team will use that concept as heavy motivation this season. "We beat them the first game last year, and they went on to run the table," he said. "Our kids will bounce back because they're competitors, and, in this district, it's anybody's game. We're going to show up, play hard and let the chips fall." Graham will take a week off before traveling to Iowa Park to face the Hawks Oct. 26. Hirschi will host Iowa Park Friday at Memorial Stadium. Graham 52, Hirschi 7
