No. 7 Holliday holds off Nocona upset bid, 13-12
October 12, 2007 11:47 PM

HOLLIDAY - Special teams and turnovers often decided the outcome of big games.

That was just the case here Friday night as Holliday used a third-quarter kickoff return and a late fourth-quarter interception to top Nocona 13-12.

Despite taking a third-quarter lead, five Indian turnovers were more than they could overcome.

Holliday's Gunnar Sewell raced 85 yards breaking tackles at midfield and putting the Eagles up for good just after Nocona had taken a brief lead.

Holliday's Brayden Little intercepted Nocona’s Hunter Willard with less than a minute left inside the Eagle 10-yard line. The pickoff ended a valiant Indian attempt to beat the No. 7 Eagles. The loss spoiled an outstanding Nocona defensive effort in the second half as it held Holiday to only 53 yards in the final 24 minutes.

Nocona struck quickly on their first play from scrimmage as senior tailback Nico Dollar took a pitch around right end and raced 74 yards for the score. The Indians conversion attempt from the swinging gate formation came up short giving them an early 6-0 lead.

Holliday then mounted a 10-play drive on its second possession, marching all the way to the Nocona 18. With the Eagles facing third-and-six, a pitch to running back Tyler Jolly was interrupted by a power failure. When the lights came back on Eagles' tight end Landrey Lemon's rushing attempt around left end resulted in a one-yard loss and an incomplete pass on fourth down ended the drive.

Two second-quarter turnovers by Nocona would lead to a Holliday touchdown and allow the Eagles to completely dominate the period. After an Indian fumble Holliday set up shop on its 45-yard line. The Eagles using a punishing ground game found pay dirt 10 plays later when Little scored from 5 yards out. The junior running back carried six times on the drive accounting for 36 yards. Shawn Lanham's extra point gave Holliday a one-point lead with 8:33 left in the second quarter.

Nocona's defense would be called on after an Eagle interception gave them the ball at their own 40. Six plays later the Indian defenders stopped Holliday quarterback Trey Lawson on a QB sneak from the Nocona 39-yard line.

After Nocona's Matt Crabtree recovered a Holiday fumble at the Eagle 18, it took only six plays for Nocona to take the lead. Willard's quarterback sneak from 1 yard out on fourth down put the Indians up 12-7 with 1:25 left in the third. Another two-point conversion failed as Willard's pass fell incomplete in the end zone.

Little was the leading rusher for Holliday with 81 yards on 21 carries while Dollar paced Nocona with 150 on 10 carries. Holliday's Tyler Jolly and Lemons were stalwarts for the Eagle defense and Nocona's linebacker trio of Brennan Dingler, Mike Penaluna, and Tyson Sandoval led a stingy Indian defense.

Holliday climbs to 3-0 in district play and 6-0 for the season. Nocona slips to 2-1 in district and 4-2 for the season.
