Raiders roll past Denton, 41-7

DENTON, Texas - Rider senior Ryan McDonald makes his share of plays for the No. 5-ranked Raiders every Friday night, but usually he's the one chasing quarterbacks.

The 6-0, 205-pound senior linebacker got to see how the other half lives on Friday as he directed a 13-play scoring drive as the backup quarterback, and he later made an interception on defense in Rider’s 41-7 victory over Denton at C.H. Collins Athletic Complex.

The Raiders (7-1, 4-0) knew staying focused was the real test this week and they managed to take care of business early with three first-quarter touchdowns before McDonald had a chance to play the second period.

The three first-quarter possessions totaled only 11 plays, while the one in the second quarter was anything but a McDonald’s drive-thru. The Raiders took eight minutes and 52 seconds off the block with mostly running plays, but McDonald completed two of four passes for 13 yards on the possession and also ran for a pair of first downs.

"It was real fun," McDonald said. "It was kind of different, but I'm getting the hang of it. I probably should have went down the middle of the field on my interception.

"We worked hard and tried not to look past any opponents."

McDonald said the team is looking forward to playing Denton Ryan (5-3, 4-0) this coming week at Memorial Stadium.

Jurell Thompson capped McDonald's march with a 19-yard touchdown run, his second of the night. He opened the scoring with a 3-yard TD run.

Beaver also kept his top two wideouts involved. Chris Edmond (five catches, 69 yards) caught a 35-yard touchdown pass on a deflection and Eric Ward (three receptions, 40 yards) caught a 19-yard strike from Beaver in the final minute of the first period.

Beaver was 5-of-5 for 69 yards and two scores in his first-half stint. He finished 9-of-14 for 159 yards with one interception, an under-thrown deep ball that was nearly a touchdown.

Denton used a running clock on several occasions to shorten the game. As a result, the Raiders finished with just 301 yards.

The Broncos (1-8, 0-5) had 123 total yards, and 78 came on their last play, a perfect post route from Adrian Irvin to Desmond Taylor for a touchdown. Irvin was 10-of-15 for 136 yards with the one pick by McDonald.

"Ryan did great and did a good job," Ponder said. "That might be our longest drive of the year! Thirteen plays!

"We're very happy and we're healthy."
