Vernon pulls away from Breckenridge

The only rumbling Saturday night in Buckaroo Stadium wasn't the BHS cheerleaders riding into the homecoming festivities on Harley Davidson motorcycles.

The Vernon Lions (5-1) regrouped after a homecoming loss last week to put a damper on Breckenridge's celebration with a 38-19 victory.
"After last week, we were just trying to fix ourselves," Vernon head coach Keith Hall said. "In the second half, we just made a few adjustments, and the kids responded well to them. Breckenridge (2-4) is a good football team, and in the first half, we bent, but didn't break."
Up 10-6 at the half, Vernon used a pair of big plays early in the third quarter to pull away and coast to the win. Vernon fullback Craig Whiteside finished with 155 yards on 14 carries, including a 55-yarder that jumpstarted the Lions on the first possession of the second half.
After intercepting a Travis Wallis pass defensively, Darien Williams helped the Lions offensively when he connected with Demetrias Murray from 42 yards out to put the Lions up 24-6 with 5:08 left in the third period.
Breckenridge running back Troy Roberson provided the majority of the offensive fireworks for the Buckaroos, finishing with 156 yards on 25 carries and three touchdowns. But Roberson's big night running the ball wasn't enough to offset the Lions' scoring chunks.
"We were hoping to capitalize with big plays," Hall said. "We wanted to try and throw the ball over the top at times because people will try and line up with a lot of people in the box against us. We executed it well, and we didn't relax for the rest of the game."
Vernon will take a week off before opening district play on the road against Burkburnett, which defeated Clyde 27-20 in double overtime Friday night. Breckenridge will rest up and begin district play against Comanche.
"We just want to get better fundamentally because we've got a tough road coming up in district," Hall said. "Burk is playing well, Graham is playing on another level, and Iowa Park is really coming on right now. Hirschi is improving and they'll get better, so it's not going to be easy by any stretch of the imagination."
