« Henrietta holds off Godley in bi-district contest, 15-9 | Main | Bulldogs' win was first in playoffs since 1990 »
Anderson, Coyotes earn 31-27 bi-district win Nick Gholson Ben Henderson and Isaiah Anderson put the points on the board, and the Wichita Falls defense put Birdville quarterback Tommy Dorman on his back six times in the Coyotes' 31-27 win Friday night at Memorial Stadium. The Class 4A Division II bi-district win, the first for WFHS in seven years, sends the 8-3 Coyotes into the Area round next week against today's winner between Everman and Fort Worth Dunbar. "The first one was a little post route. He threw it low. I went down and grabbed it and took it the house. I saw an open field, and it was done after that," said the speedy Anderson, who has committed to sign with Oklahoma State. Anderson's second TD was a beautiful throw from Henderson on a fade route. Anderson had a kickoff return for a touchdown against Burkburnett, but this was his first punt return for a score since his freshman year. "I saw nothing but green grass and then got a big block from Cameron Stiles that opened up the hole for me," he said. Anderson, who caught four passes for 102 yards, also intercepted a pass and blocked an extra point attempt. The Coyotes sacked Dorman six times. Linebacker Michael Tapscott had two of them; Daniel Cortez, Tyler Davis, Anthony Rodriguez and Brenlan Allen had one each, and Josh Mullins and Andrew Johnson shared one. "Our defense played outstanding really all night," WFHS coach Travis Pride said. "That Dorman kid is a top 10 in the country quarterback who is going to Texas A&M. He's the real deal. But our front did a great job of putting pressure on him. Whether you have good secondary coverage or not, a quarterback with that accuracy can pick you apart." The Coyotes were missing two starting cornerbacks and had JaQua Charleston, maybe their best defensive back, tossed out of the game in the fourth quarter. That helped Dorman lead a frantic fourth-quarter comeback. He ran for two touchdowns and then threw TD passes of 23 yards to Drew Barker and 8 yards to Koko Udoka. Eric Young's 21-yard field goal and Anderson’s block of the extra point after the Hawks' final TD proved to be the difference in the game. The Coyotes fumbled the ball away on their first two possessions, giving the Hawks a short field twice. Henderson's fumble on the first offensive play of the game let Birdville start a drive at the WFHS 36. The Hawks got as far as the 4 when Dorman fumbled the ball into the end zone and Chase Ray recovered. Four plays later, Robison dropped it at the WFHS 28. Birdville drove to the 8 but on third-and-one, the ball was snapped over Dorman’s head, making it fourth-and-three from the 10. The senior quarterback misfired on a pass to Drew Barker in the end zone. After two great escapes, the Coyotes' offense finally got untracked. Henderson fired over the middle to Anderson who outran everyone in sight for a 55-yard TD and a 7-0 lead with 1:29 to go in the first quarter. The WFHS defense forced a three-and-out, giving the offense good field position at the Birdville 41. Henderson ran on three of the next four plays for 24 yards and then threw a beautiful 15-yard strike to Anderson for the score and a 13-0 lead with 9:02 to play in the half. Once again the Coyotes' defense forced a three-and-out, but a personal foul roughing the kicker penalty let the Hawks keep the ball and the drove to the 4. Dorman ran a sweep right but was hauled down for no gain and the, on a swinging gate, he went to the air on fourth down and was picked off by Anderson in the end zone.
