Moguls rally to claim 9-2A title, 21-12

SEYMOUR - The fifth-ranked Munday Moguls found themselves in unfamiliar territory early in the third quarter Friday night against Seymour - trailing 12-0.

The potent Moguls offense, hampered by penalties, turnovers and the swarming Seymour defense, seemed out of sync.

But a third-quarter touchdown pass on fourth down, and two fourth-quarter rushing touchdowns, allowed the Moguls to rally past the Panthers for a 21-12 victory.

The victory gives Munday the District 9-A championship, and it stays perfect at 9-0. Seymour falls to 6-3 and 3-1 in district play.

Anason Jones' 24-yard touchdown reception on fourth-and-19 seemed to spark the Moguls and they dominated the fourth quarter. The Munday defense stopped the Seymour rushing attack as it held the Panthers to minus-21 yards on the ground in the second half.

"Our kids did an outstanding job," Moguls head coach Patrick Corcoran said. "They battled through it and it's all about them. This win came through hard work."

Seymour jumped on top just three minutes into the game as quarterback Hayden Holub scored from 1 yard out. The touchdown capped a seven-play, 65-yard drive. The extra-point try failed, giving the Panthers a 6-0 lead.

A short punt by Seymour put the Moguls in business on the Panthers 28, but Seymour's defense intercepted Munday's Steven Urbanczyk in the end zone. Munday spent the rest of the first half in Seymour’s end of the field only to see two drives end in the Seymour 20.

Holub picked off Urbanczyk on the first drive at the Panther 11 and the Seymour defense denied the Moguls at the 18-yard line on fourth-and-seven to end the second drive. Holub accounted for much of Seymour’s offense in the first half with 85 yards on 17 carries.

After Cade Wiliams recovered a Mogul fumble inside the Munday 10, the Panthers capitalized as Holub found Zack Harden in the end zone with a pass across the middle from 14 yards out. After another failed extra point try, the Panthers held a 12-0 lead.

Jones, Munday's leading rusher, broke loose on a third-and-two on the next possession for 36 yards and gave the Moguls a first down at the Seymour 16. After a holding penalty and an incompletion, Munday faced fourth-and-19 from the Seymour 24. Urbanczyk found Jones with a pass in the flat and the senior broke three tackles en route to the end zone.

The Munday defense, led by Jones and Rob Dillard, then took control of the game. After forcing Seymour to punt, the Moguls went 53 yards on just five plays with Jones scoring from 29 yards out with just more than eight left in the game.

Seymour would have one last opportunity as it recovered a Munday fumble, but the Moguls defense sacked Holub on fourth down to end any threat. Urbanczyk's 32-yard run with just more than two minutes left sealed the win.

Jones was the leading rusher for Munday with 112 yards on 17 carries. Urbanczyk added 81 yards on 16 carries. Holub was 9-of-21 for 115 yards passing for Seymour.

Comments

I think this game says more about the Moguls than last weeks win against Windthorst. Not only were they able to comeback after being down 12-0 late in the 3rd quarter, but they also lost the turnover battle 4-0 for the first time this year. I was there at the game and I was very impressed to see that the Moguls did not ever get down on themselves, they fought hard for all 4 quarters.

Way to fight, MOGULS!!!
