Throckmorton falls to Valley John Hasselmeier For the Times Record News LUBBOCK - In the game of football, turnovers can be very heart-breaking. Throckmorton head football coach Jim Holloway will attest to that as the Greyhounds suffered two turnovers near Valley's goal line on the way to losing, 61-38, in an area round Six-Man playoff football game Saturday evening at Lowrey Field. The Greyhounds finish 8-3. Valley, now 11-1, will play the winner of the Happy/Rule contest, which took place late Saturday night at Lowrey Field. "What hurt us back was getting the ball down to the goal line on our first possession and fumbling it," Holloway said. "What hurt us at the end of the half was an interception. It went right through my kid's hands and they intercepted." The Greyounds started the game at their own 34 and two passes from Brady Hogue to Derek Rankin got the ball to the Valley 2. However, Hogue fumbled the snap and Valley defensive end Armando Mendoza recovered for the Patriots at the 4. Three plays later, tailback Jacob Hancock raced 73 yards for a touchdown to put Valley ahead. The second turnover happened late in the first half. Throckmorton safety Joe Davis intercepted a Cole Brown pass and returned it to the Valley 2-yard line with 11 seconds left in the half. Valley was leading 28-24 at the time. Hogue threw the ball. But it went off through the hands of a Greyhound receiver and into the hands of Valley linebacker Justin Rucker. "That's two touchdowns you take away," Holloway said. "In Six-Man football, you can't give up points like that and expect to win." Despite those two miscues, the Greyhounds still managed to take the lead in the third quarter on a 24-yard pass from Hogue to Davis. Rankin's conversion kick gave Throckmorton a 32-28 lead with 8:16 left in the third quarter. Valley answered back five plays later when running back Jeffery Addison scored from the five. Rucker, also Valley's place-kicker threw a conversion pass to Brady Ramsey to put the Patriots ahead 35-32 with 6:47 left in the period. Up through that time, the Greyhounds and Patriots exchanged touchdowns, but things were about to change. Rucker then kicked onside and the Patiots recovered on the Throckmorton 35. Three plays later, Hancock scored on a 25-yard run and Rucker's conversion kick put Valley ahead 43-32. "It definitely was the turning point," Holloway said. "We had momentum, they got that onside kick and it changed momentum and we just never could get it back." Davis, who played running back on offense, scored on a 55-yard run on Throckmorton's next play from scrimmage to cut it to 43-38, but Valley would score the last three touchdowns of the game. Hogue completed seven passes in 12 attempts with one intercepted for 167 yards. In addition to the one to Davis, he threw one covering 44 yards to Robert Elberherr and 39 yards to Rankin. Davis keyed Throckmorton's ground game with 12 carries for 159 yards. He also scored on a 28-yard run. Hancock rushed 14 times for 206 yards and three touchdowns, with the other one coming on a 25-yard run. Rucker scored the rest of Valley's touchdowns. He rushed 10 times for 108 yards and caught three passes for 54 yards. He ran for touchdowns of one and 61 yards and caught three touchdown passes, all from Cole Brown, covering four, 24 and 26 yards "I'm very proud of these young men," Holloway said. "They played their hearts out all year long, they made it back to the playoffs and it was not from lack of effort tonight. They gave me everything they had and I'm proud of every one of them."
