Williams, Lions whip Sweetwater, 25-7 John Hasselmeier Williams ran for two touchdowns and threw for another to lead the Lions to a 25-7 triumph over the Mustangs in a Class 3A Division II football playoff game at Tiger Stadium. Vernon, now 11-1, will face the winner of the Seminole-Anthony game, which was played Friday night in Pecos, in the regional round next weekend. Sweetwater finishes 7-5. "They (Sweetwater) are an awful good football team," Vernon head football coach Keith Hall said. "We knew it would be a back-and-forth game." The Lions dominated the first half on the field, outgaining Sweetwater 164-76, but was up just 10-0 at intermission. "At times, it was frustrating, but we never gave up," Williams said. "The coaches told the kids to just keep coming off the ball and keep coming at them. We pounded on them and got them tired." Things got a bit more ticklish in the third quarter when the Mustangs took the third quarter kickoff and drove 73 yards in 16 plays, taking 7:47 off the clock and scoring on a 1-yard run by running back Rufus McCann. Cameron Studdard’s extra point cut to 10-7 with 4:13 left in the third. Vernon was finding yardage a bit tougher to come by and was backed up to a third-and-four at its own 40. However, the Lions turned that around in a big way on the next snap. Williams raced one way and then another before finding wingback Demetrius Murray 20 yards behind the Sweetwater defense. Murray raced in for a 60-yard touchdown and the Lions were on their way to another round. "That (Murray) is my boy," Williams said. "He's a playmaker and he stepped up big for us. He had that big catch. He just makes big plays at big times." Williams scored Vernon's other touchdowns on runs of 1 and 4 yards. Grant Schur kicked a 25-yard field goal for Vernon’s first points. Not to be left out was the Vernon defense, which limited Sweetwater to 10 first downs and 157 total yards. "It's great," Hall said. "It's a great feeling." "We're on a mission," Williams said. "I told the boys when we came out it's Round 2 of six and we've got to take care of these boys."
