Woodson ousts defending Six-Man champs

BRECKENRIDGE, Texas - It was only fitting that a light mist fell on the Northside faithful at the conclusion of Friday's Six-Man Division II Region III Quarterfinal contest.

The Indians saw their bid for a repeat state championship come up short 89-60 at the hands of the Woodson Cowboys in Buckaroo Stadium.

Northside couldn't keep up with the do-it-all performance of senior Robert Perez, who rushed for 133 yards and accounted for nine touchdowns.

"We just didn't execute," Northside coach Ed Donahue said. "We made a lot of mistakes and the turnovers hurt us. Woodson was the better team and I feel we probably played the eventual state champion."

Woodson (11-2) will move into the semifinal round where they will face Gustine, which defeated Zephyr 67-56.

Northside ended its 2007 campaign with a 9-3 mark.

The Indians trailed 53-48 going into the fourth period, but a 2-yard run by Perez and a 39-yard jaunt by Caleb Hagle gave the Cowboys some breathing room. In addition to dealing with Perez, the Indians had trouble after they scored, missing six extra points.

"Missing those extra points can put you out of distance and it also can play mind games with you because they can keep you in the game," Donahue said. "We just weren't clicking when it came down to our execution."

In addition to their extra point woes, the Indians also lost a pair of fumbles, including one that Hagle recovered in the end zone to give Woodson a 53-42 lead late in the third period.

Coby White, who was held in check for the majority of the night, finished the contest with six carries for 23 yards, while passing for 104 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Senior Corey Samson, who finished with 237 all-purpose yards, and sophomore Koby Dickerson rushed for a pair of touchdowns each.

Northside opened the scoring in the first period on a short run by Dickerson. Woodson answered on the ensuing kickoff when Perez returned it 78 yards for a score. The Cowboys scored on their next two offensive possessions before White took a kickoff three yards deep in the end zone and outraced the Woodson defense for a touchdown to cut Woodson's lead to 21-14 with 7:41 left in the second period.

Samson opened the second half with a 45-yard kickoff return to put Northside up 36-29.

Both teams traded scores before Woodson pulled away in the fourth period, outscoring the Indians 36-12.
