Watching Baylor

September 3, 2006

The Baylor Bears were glad to be a part of the Big 12, when athletically it could have been argued that TCU was a better choice at the time.

TCU has since been one of the best football teams in the country for those not in a BCS conference.

Because of my schedule I rarely get to watch much of a college football game. Saturday mornings are either family time or disc golf and I have to work most Saturdays. The games are on, but there's too much to do to really keep up with a game.

With rain putting a damper on disc golf Sunday afternoon, I watched quite a bit of Baylor vs. TCU.

Baylor thought getting in the Big 12 would be a big boost for recruits, but I bet TCU has been on TV 10 times for every Baylor appearence. I'm not counting pay-per-view.

Being the last choice of games every week in a major conference is not as good for TV as being one of the big dogs in a small conference.

Baylor is getting better though. It's hard not to root for them. Defensively they've improved and they are scrappy. But just like last year, the Bears had trouble finishing off drives and finishing off wins.

TCU won in the second half with a backup quarterback. It's hard to keep up with the Frogs, but I think they're in the Mountain West Conference. I think they've covered almost every abbreviation in the book now (WAC, C-USA, MWC). But none of them spell BCS.

I'm not sure TCU would have fared much better than Baylor had Ann Richards supported TCU instead of the Bears. And I'm not sure Baylor would have become a consistent winner in smaller conferences. It's just interesting to think about.
