Divided Town

August 16, 2006

I'm not going to throw anyone under the bus, but I was talking with a Rider football coach the other day when something he mentioned caught my ear.
He said that Wichita Falls should re-open Washington Jackson and close down Hirschi. Thus having, and creating a three-high school system that would totally divide Wichita Falls.
He suggested that Wichita Falls redistrict the school system, stop doing this silly little busing thing it’s got going right now and make people go to school where they live.
East Side would be Washington Jackson students, and mainly black. Old High would be Old High, and mainly Hispanic. And Rider wouldn't change, and be mostly white.
Then I asked the coach "what about just having one Wichita Falls High School?" "Rider could be senior-junior level and Old High could be freshman-sophomore?"

The coach then replied by asking me about the schools name change that would occur (if it would happen) and if "people would go for that?"
I thought why the hell wouldn't they?
Wichita Falls would dominate sports...in my mind anyway. And instead of all this Rider-Old High rivalry, yes everyone likes a good rivalry; we would have a united city (hopefully) devoted to the benefit of one.
If Wichita Falls was so drastically altered, like the Rider coach suggested, two schools would suffer, one more than the other. But in time, both would go down the toilet.
Washington Jackson would academically, unless there was a reinvigorated East Side (which won't happen) and then it would suffer athletically.
The property around Old High isn't getting any better any time soon, so I'm guessing people, mainly the white majority of Wichita Falls, would uproot again and move to the West Side of town.
I kinda see what the Rider coach was talking about, he's a nice guy by the way, but I don't think he could have been more wrong on this one.
Who would you root for — Washington Jackson vs. Rider, or Wichita Falls West vs. Southlake Carroll?

you have got to be kidding me with the whole "united city" crap. The only united we have r the supermarkets. Listen here you underprivileged nincompoop, if the changes that the coach stated happen there would be more cops stationed at every school and therefore the crime rate would jump sky high because of the lack police on the streets.
