Homer at the old stomping grounds
June 19, 2007I hit a home run last night at a baseball field I played at when I was a kid. It was actually the first of its kind for me.
My wife, my brother, my brother's girlfriend and I went out to Sheppard's baseball fields and hit a little BP - that's batting practice for the ladies.
It was fun. I haven't stepped on those fields since I was a kid. It was a little nostalgic, but not too much. The fields aren't as pretty as they used to be. My brother is a semi-grounds keeper for the athletic programs on base and I told him he was doing a crappy job. He replied that it wasn't baseball season anymore.
They still looked crappy.
Playing out there was fun. As a 9-12 year old, I never hit one out of the park. I guess I just didn't have the mustard to do it.
But boy did I crush one last night. I also ruined my shoe. After I was done with my at bats, I chased a couple of balls that were outside the fencing of the field, but I mainly wanted to see where my ball landed.
There's a ditch behind the minor league field, always has been. After seeing the ball across the ditch, I got a little excited. The ball had to have traveled at least 250 feet.
It's not that big a deal, but once I connected on the ball, I knew I got most of it. It's tough hitting a baseball any distance with a wooden bat by the way.
Back to the shoe. Trying to cross the ditch, I figured I had a good spot picked out. I was wrong. Both times back and forth I submerged my left shoe into the muddy water. What fun.
That was my night. Good ol' childhood memories.
