Marvin Gaye
September 27, 2007How could anybody not have heard the music of Marvin Gaye. That's the question I asked myself the other day.
I was at the Wichita County courthouse when an employee asked if I had any new ringtones. I said I doubt it unless she wanted a Marvin Gaye song.
"Marvin who?" was her response. I couldn't believe it. Surely, she was either joking, or she just wasn't good with artist's names.
I played her the song, "Let's Get it On," and she had never heard the song in her life.
The whole thing would have been ok if I was playing the song for someone in the 12-17 age range, but the lady is older than me.
I told her she had to be joking. Almost speechless, I turned to another employee at the courthouse and asked her if she knew who Marvin Gaye was.
She is also older than I am, with teenage kids, and she had no clue. She told me that she was a "country girl."
That's no excuse. Some people aren't big into music, I understand that, but how could anyone not know Marvin Gaye.
Maybe I'm naive in believing that more people know more about music. I love music, so who knows.
If someone doesn't know Gaye, think of all the other artists they have no clue about. If you don't, start with "What's Going On" and proceed accordingly.
Here's a little something to wet your appetite.

Resident-Evil Dump
September 24, 2007What kind of box office dumpster of a weekend does it take to put the new Resident Evil movie at the top of the charts.
I kinda liked the first Resident Evil movie. But the second was horrible and I'd put someone else's money on the third one be a substandard also.
It's based on a video game. How many successful movies have their been that have been based on a video game.
Don't get me wrong. I'd play Resident Evil on Playstation 2 all day, but I can't go near the DVD.
Good luck Chuck was a not-even-close 2nd place. Dane Cook is a good comedian with charisma, but maybe he should stick to hosting Saturday Night Live.
Back to the whole, video-game-turned-feature-film point. Mario Brothers tanked and it had that guy from Easy Rider, not Jack Nicholson or Peter Fonda, and John Leguizamo.
What else?...
The Wizard, with Fred Savage, was based on a kid who was a genius gamer, but that's not the angle I'm going for.
I've drawn a blank.
Regardless, don't see Resident Evil. Rent something like Donnie Darko and have a ball.

Hurt
September 22, 2007Johnny's cover of NIN's "Hurt" has got to be one of the best songs recorded in the last 20 years. NIN did a good job, but you feel it when Cash sings it.
The guy was on his deathbed, but he continued to record. It's too bad it took a Joaquin Phoenix movie to get me to appreciate him. Or was it a good thing?

Cowboys...so far
September 21, 2007The Boys look good. They're not the greatest, but I don't have too many complaints. They should have destroyed Miami more convincingly last week, but a win is a win.
T.O. looks almost unstoppable. Romo is the only thing that can hold him back. That bit last week when he scored when he poked fun at the Patriots was great. That fine was a little out of line, but T.O. has a past on the field. At least he's not Vick.
The D needs to step it up. Nose tackle Jason Ferguson was a big part of their 3-4 attack, but it doesn't look like Demarcus Ware is going to be the next Shawn Merriman. Ware is from Troy and Merriman is lights out, especially when he's on roids.
The O-line looks reliable. Not too many penalties, which is always a plus, and Romo hasn't been sacked more than a few the first too weeks.
Week 3 against Chicago is the big challenge. The defending NFC Champs have the pieces, aka "amazing defense," to return to the Super Bowl.
My brother is a big Bears fan, but he says he gets nervous watching Rex Grossman. The guy has the worst mechanics in the league.
The Boys and the Bears, in Chi-Town, should be a good game. Marion Barber and Julius Jones have to have a good game for the Boys to win.
If the Cowboys win the ground game, the game will be close, but Cowboys are my prediction.
Final note: Barry Bonds will be the DH in Oakland next year. Just a guess, but I don't think the Yankees and Cashman will want the guy around their clubhouse.

Tough day
September 07, 2007I had a pretty rough day yesterday. When I first started my work day I found out that a family I know , the Helenschmidts, had to deal with the loss of a loved one.
Scott Helenschmidt was killed after what I'm assuming was a cry for help. I know Scott's son, and his niece and nephew.
They're all great people. I graduated with his niece. Every year our photos were right next to each other in the yearbook. For that reason alone we'll be forever linked. I still remember our 9th grade photo. I got ragged because we had almost matching shirts.
I got even more difficult news last night that continued into this morning. One of my greatest friends in the world, Cameron Harris, lost his little brother, Jeremy.
Jeremy was in an accident, I don't know when, but they took him off life support Thursday night. Jeremy was an underwater welder, offshore, in Mississippi. My brother told me last night he was working when his helmet came off and he didn't know what to do and drowned.
He was placed on life support and his mother flew in from out of town to make the decision.
The Harris boys moved down there after graduating because that's where they're from and that's where their dad lives.
I'm really at a loss for words right now. Jeremy was a great kid. I'm contemplating whether I need to go be with his family right now...
My prayers got to the Helenschmidt and Harris families.

NFL Picks
September 06, 2007The NFL season gets underway today...can't you read the bleeding excitement coming through this type?! The year doesn't really begin until I make it to football season, the rest I just sleep walk through.
The Saints will beat up the Colts on the ground tonight for a close win and a fantastic start to the regular season. No DTs and no Bob Sanders lead to a porous run defense. I have a love/hate relationship with Peyton Manning also. Love the guys desire and skill, hate his audibles.
I'm also a Pats fan, so I must hate the Colts. It's written somewhere in New England law, my birthplace. Just like the fact that I have to hate the Yankees. It doesn't say I can't like Roger Clemens, it just says I can't like the Yankees.
I think they gave my dad the manual to hand down to me when I was born.
Anyways, I have the Pats, picking with my heart of course, winning the Super Bowl. With my head, I'm picking the Charges. Too much talent that's too young. Tomlinson is a beast with or without the ball.
Here a rundown of division winners
- AFC East: Pats
- AFC North: Steelers
- AFC West: Chargers
- AFC South: Indianapolis
Wild Card Teams: Ravens and Titans...
There's always a surprise team and I think the Titans will squeeze into the Playoffs with a record of something like 9-7.
- NFC East: Cowboys
- NFC North: Bears
- NFC West: 49ers
- NFC South: Saints
Wild Card Teams: Seahawks and Packers...
Again, two more surprise picks with the Niners winning their division and the Packers making the playoffs with an 8-8 record.
The Niners are doing something right again, and I think they make it past the first round fighting for Bill Walsh. Frank Gore is going to be something. He's got a long injury history, but he's a bulldog on the field.
I pick the Packers because I'm a sentimental Brett Favre fan. One, because my wife thinks he's cute even though he has a horrible, hillbilly smile, and two, because he plays with passion and enjoyment that is easy to see (only if he's winning).
The Packers' D is growing up quickly, so their my dark horse for the year.

Burk bulldogs football update
September 05, 2007Just wanted to let everyone know that the guy that scored the game-winning, overtime touchdown last Friday in the big win over Decatur, Lynn Barnes, might not play this week.
He got in a car wreck, he wasn't hurt that bad, he just got a small burn/cut on his neck and a bad bruise on the top of his head.
His mom/guardian, told me he's doing ok, but I just wanted to wish him a fast recovery. Lynn, the team needs you, but with a probable concussion, I think the coaches would be smart to hold you out against Gainesville.
You'll have eight more games to prove to the football gods that you have cajones on the field.
Orange and Black attack!

Fantasy nightmare
September 02, 2007I slept in for my own fantasy football draft. That's right. I'm the commish, and I woke up about 20 minutes late for my fantasy football draft.
Fantasy football is a big deal to me. Its big across the U.S., but its big to me. Its something that gets my football juices flowing and keeps them that way for the entire year, off season too. I've been playing fantasy football since I was about 13 years old.
I feel terrible, I felt terrible and I will continue to feel terrible. I ended up with some guys I like and some guys I can't really stand.
I wanted to keep my fantasy football participation down to a minimum by not joining 86 different leagues. I wanted this one and this one only.
My bro and a bunch of good friends are playing in the league and I had to have bragging rights for my drafting acumen.
It didn't work out that way. I jumped in late, like 10th round, and my team's destiny had already been chosen for me.
My first mailed in pick was Shaun Alexander. Don't get me wrong, I like they guy but I like other guys a lot more than him.
My second pick is the big stinker of the entire team, Ronnie Brown. I hate the Dolphins. I would rather watch Hirschi play football than watch the Dolphins. One they're and AFC East team and I root for the Pats, and another I'm a Burk grad.
The rest of the team is OK, but I know I could have done better. I was looking forward to yesterday for, like, eight weeks. Oh well, just like Cubs fans say, "there's always next year."

Next Reggie Bush
September 01, 2007Please excuse the music, but you have to check out this little dude run the football. He's 13 and he's from Los Alamitos, California. Looks like the next USC prodigy.
