Marvin Gaye

September 27, 2007

How could anybody not have heard the music of Marvin Gaye. That's the question I asked myself the other day.

I was at the Wichita County courthouse when an employee asked if I had any new ringtones. I said I doubt it unless she wanted a Marvin Gaye song.

"Marvin who?" was her response. I couldn't believe it. Surely, she was either joking, or she just wasn't good with artist's names.

I played her the song, "Let's Get it On," and she had never heard the song in her life.

The whole thing would have been ok if I was playing the song for someone in the 12-17 age range, but the lady is older than me.

I told her she had to be joking. Almost speechless, I turned to another employee at the courthouse and asked her if she knew who Marvin Gaye was.

She is also older than I am, with teenage kids, and she had no clue. She told me that she was a "country girl."

That's no excuse. Some people aren't big into music, I understand that, but how could anyone not know Marvin Gaye.

Maybe I'm naive in believing that more people know more about music. I love music, so who knows.

If someone doesn't know Gaye, think of all the other artists they have no clue about. If you don't, start with "What's Going On" and proceed accordingly.

Here's a little something to wet your appetite.
