Dr. Horrible
July 29, 2008I'm a little late to the Dr. Horrible's Sing-a-long Blog, but I'm glad I jumped on the train - and not in front of it - when I did.
Neil Patrick Harris returns as Dr. Horrible in a make-shift villain known as Dr. Horrible. He has his eye on a girl, but his arch nemesis/good guy Captain Hammer is there to stand in the way.
The Dr. Horrible blog is in three parts and created a miniature sensation of downloads on iTunes.
Take about 45 minutes and watch the entire thing. Don't worry about finding it, I've got it here.

MGMT surprise & NaS
July 25, 2008I downloaded this song by MGMT, a little known but growing band, a couple of months ago and I liked it.
I like it more know. I was listening to a radio show that plugged it and for the life of me, I couldn't remember where I heard the song. It was one of those songs that got lost in the depths of my musical mind.
Then I watched "21," the blackjack movie, and the song was featured on the movie. It was driving me nuts, but thanks to the Google boys, I found the song again.
Its an addictive song. I don't know what the MGMT boys did right, but they sure did enough of it to captivate me.
Anyways, check out the song - possibly even the album - and check out this clip from the Colbert Report that aired the other night about Nas.
He's running a campaign against Fox News and is up against the wall. He's got/heading/running with an organization you might want to check out as well called Color of Change.
Nas came out with another album and let me tell you its a gem. It's political. It's something that's been missing since AmeriKKK's Most Wanted and Fear of a Black Planet from the early 90s.

Why I might start watching the WNBA
July 23, 2008I've never been a fan of girls playing basketball. I don't know really what it is. Maybe its the lack of emotion or maybe its the lack (insert: call me a pig here) of tighter clothing - like women's tennis - that I can't get in to.
They have baggy clothes and most of them aren't all that attractive.
I do however like to watch a winner. I like watching Tennessee and Connecticut square off against each other. Candace Parker, now in the WNBA and involved in the above brawl, is a great player.
I suggested to my friends she might be one of a few who could hold her own off the bench in the NBA -- with the big boys. She can dunk, so she has a little bit of explosive capability, and she knows the game.
But back to why I might watch. The emotion of the game captivates me. Watching brawls of any type, baseball, basketball, football, captures the emotions on the field and inside of me to watch more enthusiastically.
You'll hear that Candace Parker is a target on the court with her L.A. franchise. If it stays that way, the WNBA might have a new fan.

Keep the Cards
July 22, 2008The Arizona Cardinals are discriminating against the Dallas Cowboys and their fans. They want to limit the presence of Cowboys fans at the Arizona stadium when the two teams play.
What a crock of crap.
How bout we not sell tickets to Rangers fans when they travel to Houston. Isn't that one of the pluses of a major sports organization? To say that the team travels well?
I know some colleges can pride themselves on how well they travel with the team.Why can't professional sports team do it as well. I understand limiting tickets to people who live outside of the area -- scalpers and such -- but a lot of people in Arizona, who may or may not be of Mexican descent, love the Cowboys.
A lot of Hispanic people breathe Cowboys when they pick a professional sports team. And talk about loyalty once a team is chosen.
So why put the hurdles in place? Maybe if you (Arizona) won at least one Super Bowl this generation you might have a larger following.
Heck if you can even make it a good distance in the playoffs more people will be willing to show up at home games in Crimson and White variables.

Godspeed God's Pottery
July 11, 2008I really enjoyed God's Pottery on "Last Comic Standing." The Christian acoustic duo did God a service every time they sang a ditty.
I didn't know if it was an act or if Gideon and Jeremiah were true believers in spreading a message.
Either way, it was hilarious.
But they were eliminated last night on the TV show -- hosted by a robotic, where's-my-paycheck Bill Bellamy.
For the past seasons "Last Comic Standing" has just done something for me. I really enjoyed Josh Blue (last year's winner) and a long list of others. Whatever happened to Dat Phan???
I'm not that big a supporter of reality TV, but the whole stand-up aspect of the show creates tractor beams for my eyes.
Esther Ku, the little Asian lady who played the little Asian lady part to death, was also sent a-packin'.
She didn't really have it. Iliza (pronounced Eliza) Shlesinger did have it.
Esther was called out during the elimination stage of the show, mainly because of her blood-curdling laugh, and she tried to take out two comics at once.
She picked on the wrong chick.
I was initially rooting for Esther, because it seemed, as she said in the show, that they were singling her out. But she didn't do the show justice.
She just wasn't that funny and Iliza was. God's Pottery was also good, but since the eliminations are left up to the audience they are a hit-or-miss group.
They also did a yo' momma segment. All the contestants got into a boxing ring and exchanged bags of tricks with timeless yo' mamma punchlines. Classic.
God's Pottery didn't walk the line. They did yo' mamma compliments. "Your mom is so awesome...she was elected Mayor of awesome-ville." Really good stuff along those lines.
So now there are two less comedians left and I'm rooting for Marcus, who does spot on Christopher Walken impersonations, with and without more cowbell.

Beer Pong
July 8, 2008I'm a little late to the Beer Pong game. I had an idea what the game was all about a couple of years ago, but now its really starting to gain popularity.
Beer Pong, as a refresher, is a game suited for the drinking-aged adults that involves a make-shift table, several beers, numerous, inexpensive cups and ping-pong balls.
The objective is to trash others or get trashed depending on the skill of the player. There are also a ton of seemingly complex rules.
Novices are usually wiped out within a game or two. Drinking a lot of beer in a short time will take its toll.
I mention all of this because I had my third Beer Pong experience on July 4th. So, as you can probably tell, I suck at the game.
I went to a friend of a friend's house and, let's just say I'm glad I had a ride home.
But like my story, Beer Pong, as wonderful game as it is, is catching on with the wrong crowd.
"Maybe he drank some bad tequila," was the wrong idea to have at the time. But I'm sure not a lot of kids know what it actually is.
I found out the guy had to be taken to the hospital to drink a little charcoal chaser. How awful must that have been? I'm sure he didn't remember it, but I bet the hospital bill sent to the parents taught a lesson or two.
Have I come close to alcohol poising? Maybe...maybe not. I really have no idea, but I'm sure a lot of people have.
Binge drinking is a problem. Kids start early -- earlier in life -- and only drink on Friday and Saturdays.
The inconsistent smashings thanks to booze cause problems, from what I hear.
So supervise each other at the Beer Pong table. You never know whose life you might save.

The Bellamy Brothers
July 7, 2008I'm sure I'm in the minority, and I hope so, but why the Bellamy Brothers. I'm sure there were a couple other aging groups yearning for a gig available to play Wichita Falls.
The Bellamy Brothers have had hits, I guess, that I've never heard of. I also don't listen to my fair share of anything county so that might explain that.
Sure I'm a sucker for Brooks and Dunn or Garth Brooks, but the Bellamy Brothers? I thought they were just a punch line in a movie.
And Charles Elmore is upset. Elmore, District 5 City Councilor, is upset because he believes the Friday Kay Yeager concert will underperform as far as ticket sales go.
Great, the tickets are $10. But yes its another niche performance for Wichita Falls and Kay Yeager.
I'm sure a lot of people like country in Wichita Falls, but the Bellamy Brothers are old country. Why doesn't Elmore convince Charley Pride to come along with the aging Brothers?
Elmore thinks people complain in this town when there isn't anything to do. I don't think that's the case. I think people complain when there's nothing fun to do.
Ask a couple of young people what they want to do Friday night -- spend $10 on the Bellamy Brothers at Kay Yeager and all that comes along with it ($5 beers), or spend $15 on a case of Keystone.
I'm sure the 18-25 year old age range will lean towards the Keystone side of a hangover.
Any Kay Yeager/the City continues to underachieve in the big name department. Cher, Disturbed, Juelz Santana, Chicago, Nickelback. What a potpourri of middle-of-the-road stardom.So Nickleback has done well in other cities much larger than Wichita Falls, is what you'll hear. Who cares.
Jerry Seinfeld has been the only "name," in my book, to come to the Falls.
And the logic behind promotion is the lack of production by Kay Yeager. Well how the heck can anyone tell how well a concert will sell unless there's an even comparison point.
Bring a big show here and see what it does. One, maybe two, and go from there. See how it does and then stick it to the city and surrounding areas if the show tanks it. But you gotta honest with results. Give us the Humane Society truth. This place (animal) will die if X number of people don't (adopt) show.
If George Strait doesn't sell with $4 gas prices, what will. Call it a day after that and stick to sporting events and stuff for the kiddies on ice.
Cher doesn't beget Madonna. Nickelback doesn't land a Nine Inch Nails. Juelz Santana is close, but far from a Kanye West or a Lil Wayne. (Anyone else notice that music is still free online if you look hard enough, and Lil Wayne was still able to sell 1 million?)
So middle of the road we go...off with the Bellamy Brothers. I'm sure they'll put on a good show, but as a coworker told me, "if they were in my back yard, I'd tell them to leave." That would be worth $10
Maybe David Copperfield can come back and make Kay Yeager and all the pain disappear.

Kill 'em all, let the grand jury sort 'em out!
July 2, 2008Who would have known that someone watching others he suspects to be breaking into a neighbor's house could get away with murder.
So I read in the paper today that a guy was cleared by a Texas grand jury of shooting some folks that he believed were doing something they shouldn't have.
Has it come to this? I still remember hearing "better to be judged by 12 than to be carried by 6." I believe that to an extent, but what makes this guy, this Joe Horn the judge and jury in the two alleged criminal's lives.I understand he called the cops. I also believe he threatened them first. In the heat of the moment who knows what really went down, but why shoot to kill.
Why not take out a knee or two. Maybe a warning shot. A bullet grazing the ear has a big effect on some people. The whole idea that this guy would come outside to stop some criminal astounds me.I thought in today's society nobody really cared enough to do something like this. But how would I feel if this guy does nothing and someone inside gets hurt?
And what would have happened if he shot the wrong person? The ruling by the grand jury sets a crazy precedence for Texas laws for the right to defend self and property and others with deadly force.
Now I can't get too up there on my high horse because I own a gun, and if anything ever happened with someone trying to come inside my house I would use the gun.
But a neighbor's home. What if someone was inside and you didn't know it, the shooter missed and holy crap you just killed your neighbor's significant other.
The grand jury's decision drives me crazy with conflicting thoughts. I could go on and on, but I'm gonna give it a rest.

Here ya go. This is the new trailer for the upcoming James Bond movie, "Quantum of Solace."
From the looks of it (how much can one person tell really) the movie has promise.
Daniel Craig did a really good job on the previous Bond film, "Casino Royale." He had enough of "it" to make a respectable replacement for Sean Connery.
The Bond girl looks pretty hot. I didn't really like the job that Eva Green (Vesper Lynd) did in the previous film, but beggars can't always get Halle Berry.
From what I've read online Gemma Arterton and Olga Kurylenko going to be the new bond girls. You don't really get to see a lot of either in the trailer, just one's, as Justin Timberlake would say it, SexyBack.
So anyways, I'm excited to see the new film. I'm a big Bond fan, but I guess I'm just going to have to wait until the end of this year like the rest of 'em.
