Bossman no more

Gary Lawson is no longer the Chief Photographer/Photo Editor at the paper. He's taken a position at his college alma mater.
Kinda leaving the other three of us up a creek...
Word is, they're not going to be hiring another photographer, at least for a while. Or, basically spreading out the duties of another 40-hour work week over three peoples.
And yeah, I pretty much put in about 50 hours working last week, one of the reasons for no blogs.
Now, I can mostly understand trying to save a bit of money staff-wise and only have three people for a while, but they've also decided not to fill the position of bossman (which is where I kinda scratch my head a bit).
Sure...it would mean a nice raise to a salary-based position for somebody (and all three of us photogs. left over have expressed interest in the position), the ability to work a Monday-Friday 8-5 p.m....although with only three photogs, the chances of only working 40 hours a week are slim to none.
It's really been weird though this last week. I mean, there's nobody to call the shots for our department. Nothing was formally said as to who we're even supposed to report to now.
Since I'm on the day shift this month, I pretty much have declared myself the interim bossman. I mean, I'm showing up to work at 9 a.m. everyday and doing some of the administrating work that Gary would normally have handled. I also declared that Bruce Smith is our most direct supervisor...mainly to deflect directives from positions way higher than staff photographer to a middle-ranking editor.
It is strange though, not having Gary around. I had the pleasure of working with him for nearly five years since I've been in Wichita Falls.
Who knows what lay ahead for the rest of the photographer staff....but you'll hear about it here for sure. That is, if I'm not working 60 hours next week.
