Celebrity overload

May 31, 2009

The problem with living in a city where there are celebrities roaming about every day is that you begin to believe that you are seeing them all the time.

After my double sighting of Shepard Smith/Cedric the Entertainer the other day, I think I've had bonafide other sighting. I don't know the actors real name, but I SWEAR that I saw Patrick from the BBC's old sitcom called "Coupling." It was on several years back, and was absolutely hilarious. I walked alongside "Patrick" for a good block or so, and I'm sure it was him.

Of course, then later on that night, I SWEAR that I saw Tim McGraw on the street, too. But then I realized that "Tim" was a little too tall to be Real Tim. (I think Real Tim is only like 5 foot 2 or something.)

Oh, well. I'm sure I'll have lots more celebrity sightings - and fake sightings - over the next three months.

The Mets

May 30, 2009

One of the best things about working for corporate America this summer in New York City is that corporate America gets really good baseball tickets.

One of my bosses surprised me and the other three summer law clerks Tuesday afternoon with his tickets to the NY Mets-Washington Nationals game. Of course, we took them, but it wasn't until we reached the new Citi Field that we realized just how good we had it.

We were 10 rows behind home plate. TEN FREAKIN' ROWS!! It was my first time out to Citi Field, and we couldn't have had a better view.

Memorial Day weekend

The sun actually came out for two whole days this past weekend up here in New York, and I made the most of it by going running on the banks of the Hudson River. This city is really bike/runner friendly, especially along the edges.

Of course, just running next to the water kind of made me a little woozy (I'm get notoriously sea/car/bus sick), but I'll get used to it.

Meat market

May 25, 2009

I guess I'm officially a New Yorker now. I have a crush on my butcher.

Yesterday, I bought a pound of sliced turkey, a pound of sliced roast beef, some chicken breasts AND some ground turkey, all because I didn't want to leave the meat counter. Oh, and when he asked me if I needed anything else, I said, "Nope. That's all. I can only eat so much BY MYSELF! (I wanted to let him know that I was single, of course.)

I don't know his name. I'm guessing he's Italian. There's just something about him, maybe just the fact that he's surrounded by all that meat, I don't know. But I'm in full-blown crush.

I'm in protein/iron overload right now, but I've got to hurry up and eat what's in my fridge before I can make another trip to the butcher.

Nobody "moseys" in NYC

May 23, 2009

My feet are a battlefield -- covered with no less than five huge blisters. I walk to work each day, which takes about 30 minutes, except this walk is not like a casual stroll. It's a full-fledged walking race to each crosswalk, and my feet have rebeled. If I don't walk fast, I'll literally get run over my all of the others walking fast.

This wouldn't be a problem if I'd just cave and become one of those women that wears a suit and then socks and tennis shoes, but that just seems so "Working Girl." Not that I'm stylish, mind you, but I have some cute flats that I prefer instead.

What happened to moseying down the street, enjoying the walk? I guess New Yorkers aren't familiar with that.

Two things I don't understand about NY

May 22, 2009

No. 1: So I'm at this frozen yogurt place and I look up at the menu. There, besides the sizes is the price AND the calorie count. Knowing how many calories my cup of frozen yogurt is the last thing I want when I'm eating it. It takes all the fun out of eating dessert.

But it's not just frozen yogurt. All of the Starbucks that I've wandered into also have the calories on the sign next to the lattes and frappuccinos. Thank God Bar-L doesn't post the calories next to the greasy plate of chili-cheese fries I get there.

No. 2: The calorie content definitely disturbed me, but not near as bad as the "sharing charge" at this other restaurant. It's a deli-type joint, and has Texas-sized sandwiches. These sandwiches could feed two people at least, if not more.

But at the bottom of the menu is this little phrase: $3 charged for sharing.

Really, $3 for sharing a sandwich that one person couldn't possibly eat alone? Charging for sharing in THIS economy, when sharing should be encouraged? Only in the big city, I guess.

Celebrity sightings

It's already totally cool when I walk to work every morning, which takes me right by Rockefeller Center and the set for "The Today Show." But on the walk home from work Thursday I had two bonafide celebrity sightings.

I'm walking past the NewsCorp building and low and behold, Shepard Smith gets out of his SUV and walks into the building. And then a few blocks later, I'm standing on the corner waiting to cross the street. I looked up and I swear that I was standing right next to Cedric the Entertainer.

And I've only been here five days. It's going to be a very busy celebrity summer.

The turquoise girl

May 18, 2009

Not only am I the only person in the city with a tan, but I'm apparently also the only one that knows how to wear color.

I had to throw on a jacket the first day I was here because it was so cold. Well, that little jacket happened to be bright turquoise (which is more tasteful than it sounds). Anyway, I walked down the street and realized I stuck out like a bright blue sore thumb. Everyone else was either in black, grey, dark hunter green or beige.

Where did all the color go? I always joke with one of my friends down at Tulane who's from NY that he needs to expand his color palete because he's always so morose looking. He explained that New Yorkers just dress dark. Makes everyone seem tougher.

Well, I don't dress dark. There's not one article of clothing I have that would allow me to blend in and disappear into the darkness of the city. So, I guess I'll just be the turquoise girl.

Cold child in the city

May 17, 2009

So I woke up this morning, threw on some jeans and a short-sleeved T-shirt and headed outside to explore my new corner of the world in New York City.

I explored exactly five steps outside my front door when I had to turn around, go back up to my summer sublet and find a jacket. That's because it's cold up here -- Texas winter cold. I'd say it's about 40-50 out there right now, plus a chilly breeze. People are wearing coats and boots. I didn't expect summer to arrived up here yet, but I at least figured they woulda hit spring by now.

Needless to say, I'm the only one with a tan on the streets, too. Down in New Orleans, there was exactly one day where I put on a coat. The rest of the time, I was outside running/walking through the park, which turned me a lovely shade of bronze. These folks up here are pasty and pale, like they haven't seen the sun in months.

Summer, please get here soon.

Live from New York

Greetings from the Big Apple!! I have arrived -- safe and sound -- in the big city.

I'm up here for the next 13 weeks to work as a law clerk in midtown Manhattan. As if it needs to be said, there's a HUGE difference between feeding the animals back on the farm/ranch in Paducah -- which I was doing 2 days ago -- and the hustle and bustle of NYC.

It's going to be a very exciting time. First, I've never lived in New York City. In fact, the first time I ever set foot in town was when I flew up for my interview in February. Although I'm not a first-timer when it comes to big city living -- I've lived in LA, Boston and Austin -- this is THE big city, and it may take a little getting used to.

Oh, and there's that other thing -- my new job. While I've been part of the working world for decades, one of those decades as a journalist, this summer will essentially be starting over for me in a new realm. I just finished my first year of law school down at Tulane in New Orleans, and now, I've got to show my new bosses just how much law I know.

It's truly going to be an adventure in many respects this summer, and I'll try to take you along for the ride.

Lara learns to link

May 15, 2009

Yep, I'm one step closer to being a computer programmer, and therefore, ruling the world. I can now insert a hyperlink on my blog. Woo-hoo-hoo!!

And just in time, too. I leave for NYC tomorrow for my summer job and looks like I'll have some company in Manhattan when I get there. Drumroll please to introduce my first link:

Guess who's in NYC?

At least . . .

May 14, 2009

My father called me a few weeks ago to tell me we had two new litters of kittens out on the farm.

"At least," he said. At least because with farm cats you never really know how many you have lurking out in the barn, the old broken down cars, the trees, etc..

Well, I'm out on the farm now for a few days between finishing up my first year of law school and heading to NYC on Saturday for my summer law clerking job, so I thought I'd check into the kitten situation.

And I'm happy report that we have THREE litters of kittens. At least.

Lady Bird has two little ones. Fuzzy has at least one that I've seen. And Lola just showed up and has obviously been nursing, though I haven't found her litter yet.

And that's not all. James Bond (who, turns out, is a girl) is preggers as well.

So that means we'll have four litters of kittens out on the farm soon.

At least.
