Saks Fifth Avenue

June 29, 2009

My office is in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, surrounded on all sides by historic New York City landmarks. I'm just a half block away from the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. I'm two blocks from Rockefeller Center. Etc., etc.

Last week, I took a different walk route to work and I found myself in front of another landmark -- the original Saks building. So I said to myself, "I wonder what street I'm on."

(Wait for it. Wait for it. Here it comes . . . .)

Well, duh. I was on Fifth Avenue. Like the name of the store says, it's Saks FIFTH AVENUE.

(For the record, I gave myself a pass on that little momentary oversight. It was morning. I was sleepy. My mind hadn't kicked into high gear yet.)

Real live superstar

June 28, 2009

So the celebrity thing is starting to get old. Saw Ryan Reynolds -- who's in that HORRIBLE movie "The Proposal." (My proposal -- don't go see that horrid movie!)

Ran into another "Housewife" at Whole Foods the other day. This time, it was Tamra from "The Real Housewives of Orange County" on Bravo. She was with her husband, Simon, who I must admit, was MUCH better looking in person. (On TV, the pock marks on his face look HUGE. Not as much in real life.)

But on Friday, I truly had a super cool celebrity experience. I saw Dan Rather. Yep, the old Texas newsman was getting into his limo and there he was, just standing on the side of the curb talking to a guy.

I almost screamed out, "I love you! You're so cool!" But I didn't, because it was Dan Rather, and I don't think he gets those kind screaming fans. (Unlike the Jonas Brothers concert on NBC that I walked past last week.)

Dan Rather. He looked good, powerful, like he knew stuff. Just like always. To think Katie Couric took his place on the CBS news still makes my stomach turn.

I've still got a good 7 weeks in the city. Who knows who I'll run into next.

The Real Housewives of New Jersey

June 15, 2009

I'm walking down the street the other day and I notice all these fancy black Escalades with tinted windows parked on the side. Then, these three women started walking toward me, and I noticed that this one looked exactly like the older sister on "The Real Housewives of New Jersey."

The lady behind her looked exactly like the younger blond sister. Then the lady behind her looked exactly like their friend who's always griping about how she wants to have a boob job.

And they walked right past me. I coulda reached out and touched their fake eyelashes. And that's when it hit me -- These ARE the Real Housewives!!! I guess I just forget sometimes that I'm in New York City and real life celebrities -- and even reality wannabees -- are everywhere.

Friday morning serenade

June 14, 2009

I have admit that i'm getting a little spoiled with my Friday morning serenades.

Every Friday morning on Good Morning America they have a group on as part of their outdoor summer concert series. Well, it just so happens that every Friday morning I walk right past Rockefeller Center, past the stage, and right past the groups when they are performing on my way to work.

I wasn't so excited about the first one -- Taylor Swift -- but the last two have been pretty cool. First, there was The Dave Matthews Band, and this past Friday, it was the Black Eyed Peas. (For the record, the Peas are Tie-knee!! They look so much bigger on those horrid Target commercials.)

I have to admit that my Friday morning stroll to work is something I really look forward to. Well, and the fact that it's the last day of work before the weekend MIGHT have something to do with it as well.

Rain, but no shine

June 10, 2009

So it's been raining -- off an on -- ever since I got to New York. My one co-worker who's from Brooklyn says it's the worst summer she's ever seen because of the rain.

Rain is especially not fun because it means that already rude and inconsiderate New Yorkers get to hold umbrellas, which just gives them more ammunition and excuse to bump into you on the street or in the subway.

And yet, well, I guess it's just the North Texas country girl in me, but I just can't ever get mad when it rains. When you grow up in a land where rain is so infrequent -- and yet so vital to everything you know -- being thankful and happy when it rains just becomes a habit.

And so, when I'm walking down the street covered in rain with my broken umbrella, there's always a smile on my face . . . maybe the only one in town.

I'm officially a New Yorker, Part 2

This New York living is really starting to sink in.

I've got a crush on my doorman. I think it's what you're just supposed to do in this town if your doorman is remotely good looking, and there's nothing remote about mine.

He's there every morning when I leave and there to greet me when I get home from work. Sorta like having a stay-at-home boyfriend, I guess, except this man's never been actually IN my apartment.

And, of course, I'd never actually date my doorman. I made that mistake once when I tried going out with the doorman/security guy at my favorite club in Austin. When it didn't work out, I couldn't go to my favorite club anymore, and this would be worse because, well, I live here.

But I can still dream about my doorman, eh?

Are sequins business casual?

June 1, 2009

So my office is business attire Monday through Thursday, but then Friday is what's called "business casual." The problem is that no one at work - NO ONE AT WORK - can tell me what exactly "business casual" means for a woman.

For men, it's simple. Either they wear pants with a shirt, no jacket and tie, or maybe they go one step below and wear chinos or khaki pants with a golf shirt. What's the female equivalent of khakis and a golf shirt, though?

I've decided, therefore, that "woman biz casual" translates to a pair of slacks and a nice shirt. That's what I'm aiming for, anyway. But see, I've got this really cute plum shirt that looks great with my light tan slacks. Problem is is that said plum shirt has, well, sequins on it.

I know that fringe or rhinestones or lots of rick-rack wouldn't be business casual, but what about sequins? Can I get away with them on Fridays?
