World Cup is here

June 08, 2006

It's hard not to get excited when you are forced to wait four years for this worldwide event. Most of the guys in the sports department up here could care less about soccer, but I'm hooked. I'm also the only one who played soccer competitively growing up as a kid.
All eyes will be on Germany for the next month, and the pressure will be on the U.S. to replicate its quarterfinal run of a year ago.
It all starts tomorrow at 11 a.m. when Germany meets up with Costa Rica.
Here are a couple of my early prediction:
1) Brazil won't win - the defending champs are the favorites, unlike in 2002 when they had stumbled through qualifying. I think Brazil's defense is a little iffy, and there's always a surprise winner every two or three World Cups.
2) The U.S. won't get out of the first round - I hope this doesn't come true, but the Americans are in the "Group of Death." They haven't looked real solid during their latest tune-ups, and right off the bat they meet No.2 Czech.
3) Spain will win - call it a hunch. But this underacheiving bunch is due for a breakout.
