Holy cow! Some craziness in 9-2A

October 27, 2007

We're at the time of the season when you can finally see how things will play out. Teams are headed in different directions, and it gets easier to pick the games.

Or so I thought.

There were several scores from last night that raised an eyebrow or two. First, though, I would like to congratulate City View for earning its first victory since 2004. On paper, it looked like an impressive 41-7 win that I didn't see coming.

* Olney 14, Holliday 7: Very early in the football season I said Holliday would go undefeated until the playoffs. But something doesn't seem right about these Eagles lately with narrow wins over Henrietta and Nocona and now this.

And part of the problem with my prediction is that I made it after Holliday romped over Windthorst and Electra, wins that don't seem too impressive now. But kudos to Olney. This helps them get back into the playoff race and makes the next two weeks very interesting.

On another 9-2A note, how weird is this. Excluding Chico and City View, did anyone else notice the bottom three teams (Olney, Jacksboro and Alvord) all almost -- or did in Olney's case -- beat the top three teams (Holliday, Henrietta and Nocona). Henrietta beat Alvord in overtime, and Nocona rallied to beat Jacksboro. Just weird.

* Graham 14, Iowa Park 13: The only way I thought this would be a close game would be if Graham turned the ball over. They did so four times. The Hawks are always a tough team, but after seeing them lose to Burkburnett 27-3, never in my wildest dreams did I think they would nearly beat the Steers.

* Real quick-- other scores that surprised me a little. The margin of City View's victory was eye-catching (it has been a long time since they have scored 41 total points), and it looked like Denton Guyer played WFHS close. Also, Munday clearly proved they are a dominant team with a 30-point win against Windthorst. And it could have been worse.

im tellin you, the view side is never goin to have a losin streak again

I knew the DEFENSE would prove to be the Moguls BIGGEST advantage in this game. Their attack at the line of scrimmage is absolutely ridiculous. 5 forced turnovers and 2 were returned for TD's, not to mention keeping Windthorst from taking advantage of their 2 forced turnovers. Oh, is Anason Jones a powerhouse of a running-back or what? Many times there were 5 and 6 Trojans trying to tackle him at the same time and they could not get him down. I know I already asked this in my comment on the write-up you had for this game, but I'd like to ask it again for the other blog readers to see. When was the last time Windthorst did not score a TD in a district game?

Great story i've enjoyed your insight all season. Keep up the good work.

This ain't a Windthorst teams of years past. They have no identity on offense and have struggled to move the ball against everybody outside of Electra. The difference in this game was Urbancyzk. Yes, Jones is a tough runner but he didn't run all over Windthorst like he had against other teams. Yardage wise he had the 20 yard TD run - he was down at the two but slid the final two yards and was given the TD - Yes Munday prolly would have scored anyway but Windthorst did stop Munday from the 6 late in the game. Considering Munday was averaging 7 offensive scores a game I thought their defense gave them a "chance", but when you can't move the ball whatever chance your defense gives isn't enough.

You would have to do some major research to find the last time Windthorst did not score a TD in a district game - if I were to guess in would have been in the early 90s before Green was there.

I've known the Trojans were not as good as in years past since I watched them in the Kickoff Classic against Holliday. Urbanczyk definitely is a HUGE playmaker for the Moguls. It's his speed, along with plenty of QB options, and having his hands on the ball every offensive snap, that give him that ability. I'll be the first to say that speed is what Jones lacks, but then again I only referred to him as a powerhouse(bruiser, Mike Alstott-ish). I don't ever expect Jones to have high yardage games, but I do expect to see him run-over somebody as he did just before halftime on the Trojans 2 yard line with about 20 seconds left. In my eyes, Jones most significant contribution to his team is not on offense, but on defense, right in the center's face, and often right in the QBs or RBs face in the back-field. He along with the other great defensive players on the D-line like Samuel Nunez and Rob Dillard, to name a couple, are probably why the Trojans were unable to move the ball.

I kind of thought the last time the Trojans didn't score a TD in a district game would be before the Bill Green era.

Hanging out at the messageboard on 1Atexasfootball.com, found out the Santo had a pretty good team (Lost in the Region Finals) the first year Green was a coach at Windthorst back in '94. So it's possible that they could have been shut-out that year. Windthorst finished third in district as they lost to Bryson in the final game of the season to finish third.
