New addition to the family
January 24, 2008Anyone who knows my wife knows she loves animals. While growing up in the Falls, she has raised dogs, cats, a pig and even goats.
Me, well I had one dog during my whole childhood existence. His name was Snowball. It was a Bichon Frise.
Like any married man knows, we usually cave into what our wives want. Before we got married, we got our first dog together -- a German Shepherd/Chow mix that I named Wrigley (after the ballpark, not the gum).
Eighteen months later, she talked me into a cat that we named Fenway (guess who gets to name the pets). I had never been around a feline, so it took a while to get used to the aloofness that comes from cats.
For a couple of years, we were in pet harmony. Once there was talk about getting a house (which we did in June), I gave in and said another cat (Yankee) could join us.
Three animals is a lot of work. And Yankee still gets on my last nerve. SO the last thing I wanted was another pet.
Well, my wife brought up the issue of a second dog to balance the animal equation. I suggested the subtraction of Yankee, which would also bring out ratio to 1:1.
She checked the paper on a regular basis and came across a German Shepherd mix for only $20. And while I was at work one night, I came home and found Ebbets (I can at least name her, right?) at the casa.
She is four months old and a great dog. Hasn't gone to the bathroom inside yet, and is not wild and crazy.
And while it was tough to find a ballpark you could name after a girl (my wife calls her Ebby), it has not been a bad transition.
Plus, I made my wife promise that four was it. I even got a legal document to ensure it (Just Kidding, although I threatened it).
