Grammy talk
February 11, 2008Ha -- I bet you were going to check out this blog posting to see an insightful recap of Sunday night's Grammy Awards.
Well, I was working, so I really didn't even pay attention to music's annual ceremony of ceremonies.
Plus, I just finally got myself an MP3 player for Christmas. My brothers make fun of me for not carrying an IPod.
I did find out that Herbie Hancock won album of the year. Why is this shocking (besides I am told it was an upset of Super Bowl proportions)?
Because I had no idea what Herbie Hancock did for a living, but I did know he was famous enough to be mentioned in a comical classic.
Anyone whose favorite movie is Tommy Boy, a '90s move starring the late Chris Farley and David Spade, knows Herbie Hancock.
Early in the movie, Farley is answering a test question in a History final. He's not very bright -- it ends up taking him seven years to graduate college.
Anyway, one of the fill-in-the-blank questions asks: ________ Hancock signed the Declaration of Independence. Farley scribbles in Herbie.
Later on while working at his dad's brake pad factory, someone tells Farley they need "his John Hancock" on a piece of paper.
Farley corrects the person by saying "It's Herbie Hancock."
For years, I watched that movie -- which I stress is very funny and a must-see for those who have missed it -- wondering who Herbie Hancock really was.
Now I know.
