More than one hoops game

February 15, 2008

It is a yearly joke I make come basketball season.

I cover one game. The whole year.

It is because my main beat is area high school football, then when that ends, I start covering the Wildcats hockey team.

I will also cover soccer, track, and some mix of baseball/softball. But, basketball -- because we have other people covering it and I am on hockey -- is a sport I rarely write anything about.

In 2004, my first year on the job, I drove to Merkel with a buddy to cover City View-Abernathy in the 2A boys regional quarterfinals.

In 2005, it was a Vernon-Sanger girls playoff game at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

I cannot think of a high school game in 2006, but I think this was the last year of the Oil Bowl hoops game (maybe that was in 2005 too), and I covered than one.

Then last year, I covered the Hirschi-Vernon boys game that decided second and third in District 6-3A.

Because of scheduling, I went to Alvord on Tuesday to cover the WFHS girls beat Boswell in bi-district, 40-32.

I figured that was it. My one game.

It is not that I don't like covering basketball. We just have two other guys who cover it here, so I usually do not get to.

But I found out yesterday that I will be driving to Mineral Wells today to cover the Olney and Windthorst girls basketball area playoff games tonight.

That's three in one year. That's a new record.
