Super Bowl phone call

February 05, 2008

Minutes after the Super Bowl, my cell phone rings while I am at work (I know -- it sucks to work the Super Bowl. But somebody has to lay out the next day's pages. Plus, we did have a TV).

It was my dad on the caller ID. I knew what it was going to be about.

First off, we are both Cowboy fans, so this wasn't a bragging call about one team beating another team.

Rather, it was to put a sports-know-it-all (or so I claim to be, sometimes) in his place.

On last month's ski trip, I had just walked into the condo from the slopes and the Bucs-Giants Wild Card game was on. The winner would play the Cowboys the next week.

Dad had to run some errands, but I told him he wasn't going to be missing anything. "The Bucs won the worst division in football, and the Giants aren't any good. Eli Manning always crumbles in big games."

As I said this, the Giants were losing 7-0 after the first quarter and they had totaled minus-2 yards.

When New York came back that day, Dad had to rub it in a little.

"I thought you said the Giants weren't very good," he said.

"I still don't think they are. Even a blind mice can find a piece of cheese every now and then," I replied.

Well, this shows you what I know.

So when I picked up my cell phone last night, I figured dad had one to throw one last barb in.

"Did that team you said was terrible just win the Super Bowl," he asked sarcastically.

Yep, they did. Eli and the Giants certainly earned it too. Congrats to New York.

CHANGING GEARS

A couple of people have asked me if I know who our area teams are playing in non-district yet. Schedules still cannot be finalized until the UIL hears all appeals in the next couple of weeks, but I do know of some games set up by some teams.

Wish I knew more, but here is what I have off the top of my head:

Hirschi: Clyde, Springtown, Gainesville, Holliday, Breckenridge

Burkburnett: Sweetwater, Argyle, FW Eastern Hills, Graham, Gainesville

Graham: Iowa Park, Burkburnett, Glen Rose (hopefully Vernon -- this rivalry is too good to stop)

Bowie: FW Castleberry

Olney: Stamford, Windthorst, Munday (I think Paradise is in the mix)

Windthorst: Holliday, Olney, Stamford, Alvord, Lindsay

Holliday: Hirschi, Windthorst

Munday: Stamford, Haskell, Jim Ned, Quanah, Olney
