Track season is here

February 29, 2008

While there have been a couple of relay-only meets the past couple of weeks, this weekend signifies the beginning of track season.

Four years ago, I had never seen a track meet. And the first one I was at was one of those all-day marathons that McNiel Field seems to hold every year.

As a rookie on the job, I was not too thrilled about the sport. My only affiliation with it during my athletic career came in eighth grade.

Everyone had to participate in track in the offseason. No ifs, ands or buts about it.

They sent me to the shot put. On my first try, I threw so poorly and offline that I almost hit my coach. My next throws were not any better.

Next thing you knew, the coaches said I could ditch track because of my club soccer duties.

So while I wasn't all excited about covering the sport in 2004, I can honestly say it has definitely grown on me.

The state meet is the real exciting time of year. And district is not bad, either.

My only complaints: a) JV meets the same time as varsity. It is the equivalent of playing one quarter of varsity football, then one quarter of JV football on a Friday night

And b) those meets that are not finals-only. Last year at the WFISD meet, it ended at about 11 p.m. There were five heats in some events, and it was dreadful to sit through.

And for media members and fans, it makes it incredibly difficult to know who won which event as they go on.
