Fewer playoff teams
October 20, 2008Last year, 15 Texas teams made the playoffs from this area.
There were 12 11-man squads and three 6-Man teams who made the cut. If I was a betting man, I think that number might be a couple fewer in 2008.
Here is a list of who made it in 2007, who I think will make it in 2008, and why:
Class 4A
2007: Rider, WFHS (2)
2008: Rider (1)
Reasoning: WFHS still has a shot at the playoffs, but not a very good one.
Class 3A
2007: Vernon, Graham, Burkburnett (3)
2008: Burkburnett, Vernon (2)
Reasoning: The Lions need to beat Decatur to make the playoffs, or this could be only one spot.
Class 2A
2007: Henrietta, Holliday, Nocona (3)
2008: Three teams from 5-2A, plus Jacksboro (4)
Reasoning: The only Class with a chance to have more. That's because the Tigers are not with the area's 2A schools anymore. The Tigers have to beat Alvord to make that happen.
Class A
2007: Quanah, Munday, Seymour, Windthorst (4)
2008: Archer City, plus two more 9-A schools (3)
Reasoning: Quanah, which is 0-2 and should lose to Wellington this week, will have its four-year streak end.
6-Man
2007: Throckmorton, Northside, Crowell (3)
2008: Throckmorton, Northside, Chillicothe (3)
Reasoning: The first two teams are shoo-ins, and I think Chillicothe, or maybe Benjamin, have a pretty good shot at getting in as the 4-A Div. II runner-up.
Total
2007: 15
2008: 13
Thoughts: That is the max. Between Vernon and Jacksboro, one of those two may not make it. But I guess we will wait and see how it plays out.
