Must-win games
October 16, 2008It is only the second week of the district season (for most schools, anyway). Some teams are in pretty good shape after the first week. And some are not.
Here are a few teams who absolutely HAVE to win Friday to have a chance at the playoffs. If not, I would consider them done.
But first, let me explain myself in how I came up with these games.
For instance, even though it lost last week, Burkburnett is not on the list. I believe the Bulldogs will beat Vernon, but even if they don't, I like their chances of winning out, and 3-2 will get you in the playoffs.
And these games fail to include contests that I believe should not be close. For instance, Windthorst-Petrolia does not make it because I think the Trojans should waltz to victory.
So here are some must-win games for area teams:
*GRAHAM at Sweetwater: Since realignment came out, I have not liked the Steers' chances of making the playoffs. If they lose this, that will put them at 0-2 with games against Abilene Wylie and Brownwood left. So Graham must win this, then maybe pull an upset down the line.
*WFHS at The Colony: The Coyotes have Denton Ryan, Denton Guyer and Rider on the schedule after this. If the Coyotes could win this, then they have a slight, slight chance at getting in at 3-4 on a tiebreaker, and maybe they pull off an upset along the way to get to 4-3. If WFHS should lose this game though, then Coach Pride will be missing the playoffs for the first time at WFHS.
* HIRSCHI at Decatur: I do not like the Huskies' chances of making the playoffs whatsoever, but a loss here will knock them out for good because the best two teams in 5-3A (Burk and Bridgeport) still remain on the schedule.
* QUANAH vs. Clarendon: I went into district thinking if Quanah could beat Wheeler right off the bat, then it could still lose its next two games against Clarendon and Wellington and be OK. Then the Indians go out and lose by 50. So if they lose this, and Quanah only lost one district game in Class A since 2004 before last week, then its postseason streak will come to an end.
