The upsets never came
October 13, 2008In previewing the games for last Friday, I guaranteed upsets. I thought there were some outcomes that could surprise people.
Oh, how wrong I was.
My biggest mistake was thinking Archer City could lose to Windthorst. Since I gave five reasons in that blog why the Trojans could win, I feel like it is only fitting to give five reasons why that ended up being an awful pick.
So here they are:
1) Sam Smith is better than anyone Windthorst has.
2) The Trojans make way too many mistakes. Some of those turnovers were dreadful.
3) Archer City may have had an easy schedule, but so did Munday last year. That did not stop the Moguls from whipping up on 9-A foes.
4) The Wildcats had the better defense going into the contest. And the better offense.
5) I figured WR/S Josh McCoy would have played, but I guess his injury (knee I think) is not healed yet. And Windthorst QB Bryce Humpert needs to be able to play this week because they looked pretty bad without him.
A couple of AC people gave me a hard time about the Windthorst pick, and Coach Smith even said he thought I was getting a little cocky with my big lead in the high school periscope (Don't worry coach. It got sliced in half because a couple of ill-advised picks).
The only quasi-upset was Bridgeport over Burkburnett, but that only was an upset based on the AP rankings.
And IP almost upset Decatur. I thought that could happen, but the Hawks fell short, 42-35.
Some other thoughts this weekend:
* Sounded like the Munday-Seymour and Bowie-Henrietta games were two of the best so far this year. Have not talked to Moguls coach Patrick Corcoran yet, but I heard through multiple people that QB Rob Dillard broke his arm.
That is truly a shame. And that won't help the school's playoff chances.
And if you are counting, schools whose QBs have suffered major injuries in 2008 include: Rider, WFHS, Olney and now Munday. That's a lot.
* People in Archer City are split on who they want to play in the postseason. If Seymour makes it (and the Panthers took a big step by beating Munday), then the Wildcats will go Div. II and get Roscoe second round.
If not, AC is the big school. In the state semifinals, No. 1 Canadian would await.
Coach Smith would rather go big school than get Roscoe off the bat, but there were some others who were glad Seymour won the other night because I guess they want to avoid Canadian.
*Quanah had lost only once in district since dropping to Class A five years ago. Thought the Indians might have a rough go in 4-A this year (it is an unusually strong one for a change), but a 50-point loss to Wheeler. Yikes!
* After Nocona-Holliday this week, there will be two unbeatens in 5-2A (assuming Henrietta beats Olney, which is a safe assumption). Can't wait to see whether it is the Indians or Eagles.
* Speaking of Holliday, this week will tell us how good it is. Because the record of the Eagles' six opponents they have played so far is 7-29. The next three team's records they play are 13-5.
