Week 4 observations

October 1, 2008

Well, there is not much a lot of teams from this area will want to remember from last weekend.

* Nocona looked sluggish in a 41-7 loss to Paradise. I was impressed with the Panthers, but Nocona -- well not so much. Coach McElroy thought homecoming weekend probably had something to do with it, which would not surprise me.

I have not seen Henrietta or Holliday yet -- they had a nice comeback against Jacksboro -- but I am going to stick with my playoff threesome of Henrietta, Holliday and Bowie for now. We will see if that holds up.

* Speaking of Jacksboro, I still believe the Tigers will make the playoffs. A coach told me the other day that he would pick them over Alvord when they played. Paradise looks like the class of 9-2A, and Boyd has got a Jekyll-Hyde thing going on. But I think Jacksboro will get third at worst.

* Vernon lost to Clyde by 22. Vernon has not scored more than 14 points yet. Vernon is 2-3, with its wins coming against an Oklahoma team (Altus) and a bad team (Breckenridge, which is on course for a 1-9 record. They do have a tough schedule, though).

It is hard for me to believe I am writing all these things about the Lions. And I know it is hard for Coach Hall, who has had tons of success out there, to go to sleep at night.

* Hirschi-Iowa Park is looking like a matchup of winless teams come Week 8. And the key matchup will be the Huskies' stumbling offense vs. the Hawks' leaky defense.

* I know both QB Callen Pittman and WR Jodee Wales played defense for Olney too, but I am surprised the Cubs are giving up so many points. Windthorst, Jacksboro and Munday have scored season highs against them the past three weeks.

As I wrote today in my 5-2A preview, lots of coaches are telling me not to forget about the Cubs when district rolls around. And I knew the offense would be sluggish, then slowly pick up. But I did not think they would be giving up so many points.

* Not let's look at some bright spots. Archer City and Burkburnett are both still undefeated. Windthorst and Munday both earned big wins over the weekend. And Rider finally won a game, although it almost blew a real big lead at the end.

Now it's a week of rest for most teams, followed by some intense district races.
