Week 5 predictions

October 2, 2008

There will be a lot of area stadiums with the lights turned off this Friday night. For several schools, this week is a bye, a transition from what didn't matter to what does now.

But I can tell you one place that should have quite a crowd. The Jacksboro-Henrietta matchup should draw followers from both towns, plus coaches, players and fans from Bowie, Nocona, Holliday and Paradise.

The first three mentioned schools are off and want to see, as do I, how good this Bearcat team really is. And Paradise, off to a 5-0 start, takes on Jacksboro next week.

This game should be a defensive battle. I was impressed with Jacksboro's defense in a 15-7 loss against Bowie a few weeks ago, and the Tigers held Holliday in check last week.

Unfortunately, Jacksboro has not been scoring much, either. And they will be without RB Logan Gunter, who suffered a concussion against the Eagles, which will not help.

What this game comes down to is whether the Tigers can stop Henrietta QB Seth Crumpton. He will most likely be the best player on the field Friday, and that is why I give Henrietta a narrow victory.

* Rider at Denton Guyer: This Thursday game is more intriguing now that Guyer is 4-0, including a big comeback win against The Colony last week.

Still, I like the Raiders, who can be never counted out, nor should they be counted to hold on when up by 17 with about five minutes remaining (as they almost lost last week under those circumstances).

* Lake Dallas at WFHS: The Coyotes need to win this one in order to help their playoff chances. I think this game is a toss-up, and the last WFHS toss-up was against Denison, which won by several touchdowns. So I will stick to Lake Dallas on this one, which should be high-scoring.

* Bridgeport at Graham: The Steers are playing some pretty good offensive football, but not so much on the defensive end. Which will be a major problem in this one, because the Bulls have been scoring lots and lots of points. I will take Bridgeport and the over, which I set at 70 points.

* Seymour at City View: The Panthers want to head into district with a three-game winning streak. Against the Mustangs, they should easily do the trick. Say 28 points.

* Archer City at Gorman: Wildcats have things clicking pretty good on both offense and defense so far. That trend should continue again.

* Lindsay at Petrolia: Pirates will still be looking for their first win of the season after this one.
