It just doesn't feel like the playoffs yet
November 13, 2008For hundreds of teams across the state, a new season starts tonight. Or Friday and Saturday, when elimination is at stake.
But for some reason, I am not feeling the playoffs yet. I think there is a reason for this.
It seems like there is way too many area teams on playoff byes this week.
I cover our area schools (not Rider) and excluding the Raiders, Oklahoma and private schools in the TRN coverage area, we had 13 area teams make the playoffs.
Of those 13, nine are off this week. Basically it is our 3A, A and 6-Man schools. That leaves four area playoff games (which I will preview later in the day) going on.
I usually cover at least 2-3 games during the first weekend of the playoffs, and last year I covered four in a 48-hour span. This week, I am only doing one -- Holliday and Merkel in Breckenridge.
I was even able to get a rare Tuesday off so my wife and I could do some baby registering in the Dallas area. Down time in the playoffs is absurd for me.
This week should go by quickly though, and next week will provide a couple of tantalizing matchups: Roscoe vs. Archer City and Burkburnett vs. China Spring.
By then, I really think I'll be in the playoff mindset.
