Some good football jobs open

January 15, 2009

Usually after the Christmas Break, the high school football coaching carousel begins. Already, a number of pretty attractive jobs are open.

One of them is Sweetwater. Ex-Olney coach Kent Jackson has left to coach at Frisco Heritage, which will play as a JV team next year and a 3A school in in 2010-11.

I wasn't around when Jackson turned the Cubs program around, but I have talked to him many times while in Sweetwater and when he was coaching in the THSCA all-star game. He's a great guy, and it sounds like he is ready for a new challenge.

* Childress -- Mark Manley and the Bobcats have parted ways, and after reading the story in the Amarillo paper, it sounds like Manley may have been run out. Obviously, Childress is a strong program that has thrived since going down to 2A. It will be interesting to see who applies for this one.

* Brownwood, which became open in December, has had 88 applicants. This is a pretty prestigious job, so we'll have to wait and see how it plays out.

We'll have to wait and see if any more come open, especially in this area. Right now, we've had no head coaching switches, but I am sure that will change soon.
