Seymour goes on the hunt again

March 16, 2009

Josh Castles is headed to Bowie, leaving Seymour on the lookout for another head football coach. Two quick thoughts about this move:

1) I think Bowie really wanted him before it opened up. Or at least was pretty interested. They called Castles up and asked to apply. And he was one of 12 finalists interviewed. And I know there were a couple of pretty interesting/tempting names on the list that did not even get interviews.

I talked to Superintendent Evans on Thursday, right after the second day of interviews. He said he could have chosen from any three (of the eight he had seen), and that was with one more interview day to go.

But I think what Castles did with Seymour in what was supposed to be a rebuilding year definitely caught some eyes.

2) I talked to Seymour Superintendent John Baker and kidded with him that it seems like I am talking with him every year regarding a new coaching search.

Whoever gets the gig will be Seymour's fourth coach in as many years. I find two interesting things the previous two guys had in common. Both of the last two -- Castles and David Fambrough -- were guys without head coaching experience who had had success as offensive-minded coordinators at the 5A/4A level.

And both weren't burning rubber trying to get out of town. Breckenridge went after Fambrough in June, calling him up after a late coaching search began. It helped that Fambrough had some ties to Breckenridge.

And Bowie called up Castles. I know he applied (and I believe was interviewed) for the WFHS job, but Castles was not putting his name out there for every job opening across this region. I don't think Castles is the new Bowie coach if he is not asked to apply.

So Seymour can take heart in that. Castles was a great last-minute replacement, and they should still find plenty of worthy guys this time around. Hopefully, they can get one to stay a while.
