Thoughts on the Bowie-Brock game

March 6, 2009

I'm back from Austin and just wanted to pipe in some thoughts on Bowie's 46-42 loss to Brock in the 2A state semifinal.

*First, I agree with Coach Garrett that this was the state championship game. Brock plays Woodville tomorrow, but i don't think it'll be close.

Brock and Bowie played at such an intense level of play today. And I remember thinking Woodville didn't have the height to match up with either Brock or Bowie. Their tallest girl is 5-9.

My prediction: Brock by 15, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's more.

*Bowie just never got its offense in sync, and Brock's post players had a lot to do with that. They swatted a couple shots early, which set the tone. The Lady Rabbits hung in there during the first-half dry spell because of quality defense of its own. But they could never get that 8-0 run that would tie the game or give them the lead.

*Both teams shot free throws well, which is always nice to see in a big game. Brock was 21-of-24 (and made its first 15) while Bowie's Megan Workman was 14-of-16.

*It's never fun to end a season on a losing note, but the Bowie girls have lots to be proud of. Having a 36-3 record is impressive no matter who you play, and they played some great teams this year. Interestingly enough, the 3A final features Robinson (who Bowie barely beat and barely lost to) against Argyle (who Brock beat). I think that's pretty telling how good both Bowie and Brock are.

*One last note for those who read my Friday column. I'm back in town, and my wife hasn't had our baby yet. Still expecting it any day now, and I'm glad I didn't have to rush back from Austin.
