Seymour makes hire; Petrolia next to go
April 24, 2009I have been meaning to blog about many different topics -- the poor crowds at the Wildcats playoff games, the top-notch 5-4A track meet at Little Elm, the cold/windy weather that has plagued track meets all season.
But honestly, with a month-old kiddo around the house, I have not been able to break away. Now I have some spare time, so let's talk some football. Mainly about the two football hirings going on in the area.
Seymour chose their man earlier in the week, picking Nazareth's Rocky Smart. He started out there two years ago replacing Ricky Peacock and has been to the playoffs twice.
I don't know a lot about Smart, and I did not get a chance to talk to Superintendent Baker about him, either. But Seymour did interview five finalists, and it sounded like they got a bunch of quality applicants.
Unlike its last two hires (David Fambrough and Josh Castles), Smart had some previous head coaching experience. And I bet Baker is hoping Smart sticks around for longer than a year.
If you are a fan of the Panthers, you have to figure the higher-ups made a great hire, because they have nailed the last two. In fact, Fambrough and Castles were so good, they moved onto bigger schools very quickly.
I also don't know what kind of offense Smart runs, but I do know his QB threw for more than 1,600 yards this season. So I am thinking it may be some version of the spread.
The only other 11-man coaching job in the area open right now is Petrolia, and it will not be open for long.
I was told today that a decision should come from a board meeting Monday. I know they interviewed four finalists -- two on Wednesday and two on Thursday -- but I do not know who they are.
So I guess we will wait and see. Petrolia is not a shabby job at all, but I think right now, with its recent success, that Seymour is a better one.
