Wildcats facing elimination

April 7, 2009

It sounded like the Wichita Falls Wildcats' two losses to Topeka over the weekend weren't for a lack of effort.

But the fact remains that they are one game away from elimination. Another hockey season -- barring an unbelievable comeback -- will end in the first round of the playoffs.

And Wildcats upper management will have at least one big decision after this one. Coach John Bowkus' contract is up after this season. Will he get renewed?

The only other time Wichita Falls had a coaching change occurred when it missed the playoffs. That did not happen this season because every team in the division did make the postseason.

But it is obvious that the Wildcats underachieved this year. Expectations were high, and a sub-.500 record is a sign of mediocrity that most fans won't tolerate. And it has not been just one department that has let the Wildcats down.

Goaltending has been inconsistent, the defense has a knack of committing turnovers at inopportune times and there is a lack of finishers on the offensive end. For the second straight year, the Wildcats were the most penalized team, proving a lack of discipline.

So I guess we will have to wait and see what happens with Bowkus and the Wildcats' future. I have a feeling the wait won't be much longer.
