7 things to ask before hiring a painter

1. Does the painter give you a business address? Will you be able to find the painter again if there are problems?

2. Does the painter have a business phone number or is the only phone number you have a mobile number which will likely be disconnected the next time you call?

3. Is the painter licensed? It is far easier to resolve a dispute with a licensed contractor than a non-licensed one.

4. Is there a chain of command? Is there somebody you can go to if you’re unhappy with the performance of the painter?

5. Does the painter guarantee their work? A written warranty is important, but a written warranty must also come from a company that will still be around for the life of the warranty.

6. Does the painter want an up-front payment. If the painter doesn’t have sufficient credit to buy the materials needed to complete your job, how likely are they to spend your down payment on the materials for your job?

7. Does the painter give you a defined job schedule. Will the work begin and end on time? And what happens if it doesn’t?

Murray I hear people talking about Floetrol or Penetrol, what are these products used for?

Floetrol or Penetrol are additives to use in paints to help them flow better. Floetrol (latex) Penetrol (oil). With the Graham Aqua-borne ceramic finishes it is not recommended to use these products because they are made to dilute waterborne technology that makes the Aqua-Borne Ceramic finishes so durable. - Murray

Murray, what do put in my paint to stop mildew from growing on my walls? Ken. Taylor, MI

Normally you would have to add a packet of mildewcide into your paint after preparing the walls. When you purchase the Graham Aquborne Ceramic this feature is already built into the paint. - Murray

Murray, I just recently moved into a home that a smoker lived in before me. What can I do to get rid of the nicotine stains on the walls?

The only thing I know that will work after you wash the walls down with T S P and water is to prime the entire surface with Graham’s Acryplex oil based stain-blocking primer. This is the only product that you want to use to block out smoke and nicotine to prepare a surface for painting. When you apply the blocker it is going to seem very blotchy, but that is perfectly fine. Allow to dry 24 hrs and than apply your finish coat of any of Graham’s interior finishes. One last thought, have your primer tinted to 50% of your topcoat for color for excellent coverage. - Murray

Murray, I need to match a paint color and I do not have any more of the original paint left and I can’t remember the name of it, what can I do?

If you do not have any of the original product left and want to match it as close as possible, cut out a small area of the drywall with the color on it, about the size of a quarter. I would than take it to any one of the Graham Paint center’s listed on my site to have them computer color match it! While your there ask them to show you the Aqua-Borne Ceramic wash test to see that a flat really can wash and scrub as well as an eggshell or semi-gloss.

Murray, I was wondering, when painting my doors and wood trim in my home what type of paint finish should I use?

These areas usually take a lot of abuse and you want to make sure you protect them. I suggest using Graham’s Aqua-borne Ceramic Satin or Gloss finish. Two coats of either one of these finishes will hold up against any amount of wear and tear. Satin has a little less sheen than the gloss so I would stop by any one of my Graham Home improvement partner stores to take a look at what sheen samples to choose from. - Murray

I want to paint my bathroom and I’m worried about mold what should I do?

1. Wipe down the walls with bleach and water using 1/3 bleach and 2/3 water. Make sure to use gloves so as not to damage your hands. Then rinse thoroughly with a clean bucket of warm water.

2. Repair any holes or dents irregularities on the wall area to be painted. Once repairs are complete sand with 220 sand paper and wipe walls with damp cloth. Then prime all repaired areas.

3. Now comes the fun, if your painting the wall in flat I recommend you use Graham Aqua-Borne Ceramic flat, it’s washable and scrub able

How long should an exterior paint finish last? Ann from Southfield

Most regular vinyl-acrylic paint coatings will last and look good for only about 5 to 7 years. Graham’s Aqua-borne ceramic exterior house paint is guaranteed to last for as long as you own the home. With Graham’s Waterborne technology and ceramic resin this house paint performs like an oil finish in durability but does not fade, and resists cracking and peeling!!!! Where do you find washable flat paint?

The only washable paint I know of is Graham Paint Company in Chicago. Graham manufactures paint, which is distributed all over the country. They also the only one’s I know of that have their waterborne – ceramic paint available for residential use. But let’s get back to your flat paint question, Graham offers a flat paint that you can wash crayon’s, iodine, washable marker. It washes and scrubs like oil finish but does not yellow or have the smell of oil paints. - Murray
